Nancy Edwards

Obituary of Nancy Tegger Edwards

Nancy Tegger Edwards, 91, of Burnt Hills, NY, passed away at her residence in Acton, MA, on May 30, 2022, with family at her side.

Nancy was born on October 23, 1930, in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of Edith Wohl Tegger and Theodore Victor (T.V.) Tegger, She graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School (1948), and modeled for the Patricia Stevens Agency in Chicago the summer before college. Nancy attended Grinnell College for two years, before transferring to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her B.A. in Political Science (1952).  Years later, she completed her education, earning a Master of Public Administration degree from the State University of New York at Albany (1982).

In her mid-twenties, Nancy worked for the Social Security Administration and for the Leo Burnett advertising agency and spent a summer in Madison where she met her husband of 65 years, James E. Edwards. They married in Palo Alto, California, in 1956, where Nancy worked as a researcher at the Hoover Institute at Stanford. Nancy was a devoted mother to their two children, always putting family first during their younger years, but staying active in the Burnt Hills community by serving in the League of Women Voters’ and engaging in one of her passions, bridge. Nancy was a superb bridge player, taking pride in her frequent appearances in the newspaper’s bridge column. In addition to playing in several local groups (including a couples group of close friends for 50 years!), Nancy traveled to annual tournaments around the state.

With her children grown, Nancy returned to the work force with a series of jobs, including a stint at the Schenectady Public Library, but her favorite was coordinating the travel abroad program at Union College as an administrator in the foreign languages department. She loved meeting the students and professors, and formed a close friendship with an art professor from China, who painted her portrait!

Consistent with her focus on family, Nancy took trips to England and to Hungary to research her family genealogy, and organized a family reunion in 2001 to share her research with familiar and newly discovered family members. Nancy’s love of travel took her all over the world with her husband. They explored more than 20 countries across North America, Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. For many years, Nancy and Jim rented a condo in Siesta Key, Florida, for 4 to 6 weeks every winter, joining a group of friends, who welcomed one another to a rolling party of barbeques, birding, and beach walks each year! This adult “winter camp” was one of Nancy’s greatest joys in her retirement.

Closer to home, Nancy enjoyed welcoming her much-loved granddaughters to their home in Kevin Drive every summer and December holiday season, where the girls delighted in a beautifully decorated home and a seemingly endless supply of Christmas cookies, which are still cherished recipes. Spring was figure skating show, dance recital, and graduation season, and Nancy, the proud Nana, faithfully attended every milestone that she could.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband James; her daughter Susan Edwards Richmond (James Richmond) and their daughters Elana Richmond and Sonia Richmond; and by her son Jeffrey Edwards (Nancy Edwards) and their children: Amy Parker (Andrew Parker and family), Kristine Dingman (Michael Dingman and family), Mathew Salerno (Sara Salerno and family), and Mary Salerno. She also leaves her sister Judith Tegger Kildow (Alfred Kildow) and their children Meredith Kildow Faeth (Matteo Faeth and family), Kelly Kildow, and Renee Kildow.
